For this assignment, I believe that the two questions addressed were, “Why did Truman decide to involve the US in the conflict between North Korea and South Korea?” and “Was US involvement in the Korean war ultimately successful?” I chose these two questions because this assignment was, in fact, titled, “The Korean War” and with the help of my newly learnt information gained from this and the previous lesson, I can now fully answer these questions. First of all, Harry S Truman decided to involve the USA in the conflict between North and South Korea because, after the Truman Doctrine was instated, it was the United States’ responsibility to stand up for free countries fighting against tyrannical, communist states. North Korea was a communist state, a puppet for the USSR. South Korea, however, was not communist, so they were invaded by Soviet forces. This prompted action from the US that became known as the beginning of the Korean War. The question now is, “Was US involvement in the Korean war ultimately successful?” The answer is yes, the United States’ involvement was successful. The North Korean forces, backed the power of China and Russia, were indeed kept north of the 38th parallel, which is the territory line between North and South Korea.
